A Shot in the Dark…
March 25, 2008I’m not usually one to believe in destiny or prophetic dreams. Maybe it’s just the ex-lit major side of me speaking here, but sometimes I feel like events lead into other events, and our brains subconsciously give us little bits of foreshadowing that we don’t understand until we near the climax.
This past week I’ve been plagued by dreams of past situations gone wrong – and by plagued, I mean every night for over a week. Today I may have been given a chance to make one of those situations right. Maybe? Probably not. I took the chance and the situation is no longer under my control.
I’m not a big Longfellow fan, but this seemed to fit the situation:
I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

Digital Detritus 
We’re all charolastras tripping the life fantastic. Everyday, in fear of becoming Joycean or Philip K. Dickesque, Life dishes out cues so laden with synchronicity that it’s hard to believe that randomness is a real event. One might be warmed with the thought that you can’t ever be alone in Life, for there are signposts (in dream, event, insight) signaling the way; but only if one is inclined to open their eyes. I’m fond of simultaneously arguing for and against the free will/fate conglomerate by saying there is nothing you can do wrong, no matter what you do: does a novel’s conclusion change before you arrive at that point?

my inclination is to think of this in the post-modern sense – i.e. i understand my life as a narrative in order to make sense out of absurdity. what i originally saw as “foreshadowing” in my dreams could have very well been the result of me obsessing about something then taking some course of actions to bring the dream into reality. probability and all that shit just further complicates the whole situation. in any case, thanks for the comment 😉
