The Colors Reverse

April 14, 2008

God, I am so fucking sick right now… I can handle the hacking cough and phlegm, but violent chills always kinda freak me the fuck out…  Something about not feeling like I’m in control of my body, I guess.

Anyway, this one is the result of feverish hallucinations and mild insomnia.  Enjoy.

More Deck Designs

April 8, 2008

So, rather than trying to cram the faces of five writers/philosophers into one design, I decided that each of them deserved their own, personal deck design. Here are the ones I’ve done so far:

Art Is Hard

April 8, 2008

I saw Cursive tonight. Great show. They totally did not fit the stereotypical “look” of most bands in their genre, which was refreshing. Granted, Cursive has been playing for a lot longer than any of the trendy emo-pop bands you hear these days; in fact, they’re probably somewhat to blame for that whole musical blight! As much as I should hate them for that, I can’t… their music is just too damn good. I can’t deny that I have a soft spot for older emo (i.e. before the clusterfuck) – bands like Cursive, (older) Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Texas Is the Reason.

In other news, I decided this week (on a whim) to try my hand at designing skateboard decks. You would think that I don’t have papers to write, assignments to grade, a film to finish, and plenty of other work to keep me busy… Actually, I think this could be an interesting design exercise, since it will force me to work with a very specific size and format and still be creative. Also, I’ve been wanting to try to do stencil art for quite awhile, and this seemed like an easier (more legitimate) option than vandalism. :P

Here are the first few I’ve done:

This one is based on my redesigned cover for Magnetic North. I decided to start out using designs I’ve already made just to see how they would translate into this medium.

This one is based on one of the t-shirts I designed for the Pelican Pub in St. Petersburg, FL, at the beginning of last year (which they still haven’t printed…).

This design is primarily based on some of the visuals from Cory Arcangel’s Data Diaries.

…and finally, my favorite one. I know this makes me kind of a pretentious fuck, but I couldn’t help myself! I call it the “existential deck.” Can you name everyone here? I’m still trying to figure out how to fit Dostoevsky in there without his face getting covered up by the trucks :D

More Stills

March 13, 2008

I feel wasted. Not drunk wasted or high wasted, but wasted wasted. Like hoping you survive through the night wasted. Spilled and broken and empty and wishing that you could just fall asleep, but your body won’t let you wasted. Too much of the artistic process can do that to you, I guess. I was going to make another video production diary tonight, but I just don’t have it in me. Here are a few more stills from my current rough edit.

This is one of the first multiple frame scenes in the film. Just a short montage clip. As you can see, I still need to do some color correction, but this is just a rough cut.

Another multiple frame scene. As you may have guessed by this point, this will be something of a theme throughout this film.

Here’s Spammer craving some interaction with the outside world. Eventually this will also be a multiple frame scene, showing what he sees through the window.

Maybe this scene is a little cliché, but it serves a purpose.

That’s it. Hopefully I’ll post another video production diary tomorrow. Tonight I’m gonna get drunk and fall asleep on my couch.  Word.

Ode to a Lost Band T-Shirt

March 8, 2008

I bought a t-shirt at the Evangelicals show last night. It was black and said “EVANGELICALS ARE STRANGE” in a red font reminiscent of a bad 70s horror flick. Somehow, on the way from the concert to my apartment last night, the shirt disappeared. I may have left it on the bus, and since it was a late bus, I doubt anyone else picked it up. I’m going to check at their lost and found tomorrow, but I shook my imaginary magic eight ball, and it said “outlook not good.” I guess this is what I get for coming home drunk.

As far as concerts go, last night was fucking rad, though! The Evangelicals played a great set, and the Headlights (the band they were touring with) were a pleasant surprise! I also got to chat with one of the guys from the Evangelicals for awhile about other concerts, parties, cornfields, getting drunk, and the virtues of cherry-flavored Pepto Bismol.

Before the concert, I also checked out “Studio Dance” at the Krannert Center, which was a series of thesis performances by four of the dance MFAs. Each performance was unique and very interesting. Honestly, I wish I could write about them, but the longer I think about the performances, the harder it becomes to find a way to accurately communicate the experience. They all evoked a wide range of thoughts, ideas, and emotions, and if you weren’t there to experience it yourself, I don’t know if anything I write would make sense. In any case, it was a fantastic show.

[Just a quick addendum: my swimming stats for today were 900 yds in 30 min, 1300 yds total in 50 min.]

UPDATE: I called the MTD and campus police today to check their respective “lost and found” boxes, and… nothing.  It would seem that my shirt is indeed lost forever.  I might put up a couple of posters around campus, but it’s probably wasted effort.

“Transition” v.2

February 23, 2008

I decided to make another version of Transition.  All I changed was the soundtrack, but it makes a huge difference.  I went back to the electronic instrumentation, and decided to create something more layered and meditative.  I think it was pretty successful.
